About our Trust

Welcome to University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT)

Who are we?

We are a University teaching hospital full of hard working and dedicated staff provide community and hospital services across the Morecambe Bay area - an area covering a thousand square miles in south Cumbria and north Lancashire.

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services. 

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Our community services for adults within the community across Cumbria are provided in people’s homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.

People are the lifeblood of our services. We touch so many lives each year with the services we operate, and whatever service it is and whatever developments we make, there is a person at the end of it - both making the improvements and receiving the benefits.

Our key values are compassion, dignity, respect and working in partnership with our staff, volunteers and partner organisations.

Our Flourish at Work is a big part of that, and in December 2018, we were awarded Gold from the Better Health at Work Awards.

We aim to be one of the safest organisations within the NHS with our staff committed to providing safe, high quality care to patients all of the time. No matter which of our services you use, all of the team will work together to ensure that you receive the best possible care.

It is fair to say that it is the people that make our Trust what it is, and we are immensely proud of all our teams across the Bay.

Quality shines throughout the Trust, and the awards that our Care Groups, corporate teams or individuals have either won, or been shortlisted for, show the achievements are being recognised at a national level.

In 2018/19 alone, our teams won over 17 awards including:

  • The Overall Winner Award and the Employee Engagement Award at the Personnel Today Awards
  • Ranked 7th in the Inclusive Top 50 Employers and the top NHS organisation
  • Cavell Stars Awards for various staff in the Trust
  • A HPMA North West Award for the cultural transformation at Morecambe Bay
  • The Hartly Larkin Award from the Academy of Fab Stuff for the RLI’s Acute Surgical Unit
  • The Impacting Clinical and Performance Targets Award at the Allocate Awards
  • A Health Business Award for our Estates and Facilities Porter Allocation System

We were also shortlisted for over 15 awards in 23 categories in awards such as:

  • Two Health Service Journal Value awards
  • Public Sector Paperless Awards 2018
  • RCNi Nurse Awards
  • Employers Network for Equality and Inclusion
  • Two Personnel Today awards
  • Two Nursing Times awards

Our Trust Board / management teams

The Trust Board has overall responsibility for the operational and strategic direction of the Trust and is accountable, through our Chair, to NHS Improvement - the regulator of Foundation Trusts.
